Visit a Local Park
No matter where you reside, odds are that there is a park nearby. For us, there are several local parks within a short driving distance. Jennifer and I enjoy visiting our local parks as they are free to get into, and have some beautiful trails and water features. Whether you want to go for a walk, sit on a bench and people watch, or go for a run on the trails, visiting a local park is one of our favorite fun things to do with friends. The best part is that you can spend an hour or bring a picnic basket and some food and have a nice relaxing day in the sun or shade and catch up on life!
Have a Movie Day
Going to the movies also made our list of fun things to do with friends. This option is good for someone who wants to make a last minute plan, and doesn’t want to have to worry about the weather outside. Depending upon where you live and the time of year, this option can be used year round and a rainy or snowy day will not impede your plans, barring it’s not a flood or blizzard outside! If going out to the movies isn’t your thing, you can always rent a movie or tune into your favorite series on Netflix and binge watch some or all of a season of your favorite show from the comfort of your own home. If you have a CinéBistro or similar themed theater location nearby, you can enjoy a movie with dinner and a drink in a reclining chair. We have done this for a dinner as a treat and it is very nice and comfortable to boot!
Go for a Hike
One of our favorite things to do with friends is to go hiking. We are big into the outdoors and nature and for us one of the best ways to relax and unwind is to go for a hike. Pack up your backpack with some water and snacks, and head out to your local trail or mountain and enjoy a vigorous hike while conversing with your friend(s). Once you reach your destination, take a break and find a comfortable place to sit and enjoy catching up while enjoying the fresh air of mother-nature. This can be a great option for active individuals who enjoy being on the go, but want to take time to catch up with friends or challenge themselves.
Go to a Local Concert
Throughout the year, most towns and cities alike, offer concerts and festivals that can be enjoyed for a small entry fee. These can be something that you can spend the entire day browsing the various vendors, or just the evening listening to your favorite music. If music is your thing, this is one of the fun things to do with friends that we definitely suggest! Sometimes the biggest challenge with this option, can be choosing which concert to go to depending upon which type of musical genre you are interested in. Jennifer and I enjoy this option, as it is something that we take advantage of at least once or twice a year as there are several good options offered around us which allow us to see some of our favorite groups in person!
Host a Dinner Party
Whether you want to do something theme based and fancy, or something simple like a pot luck, hosting a dinner party is a wonderful way to get your friends together and catch up during our increasingly busy lives! This option can be useful for guys or girls in that the ladies can take advantage of a wine and cheese tasting party and the men a beer or sports related event. Before you judge, we realize that some men are into wine and cheese and some women into beer and sports, so you can adjust accordingly! If you choose the pot luck option, you can throw together a dinner party with relative ease and minimize the amount of cooking and prep work that you have to do as the host. If this goes well, you can consider rotating who hosts the dinner party every few months to keep it fresh and allow your different friends to play host.
Visit a Winery or Brewery
One of our favorite fun things to do with friends is to explore a new winery and experience their unique wine selection. Both of us love to indulge in a glass, or two of wine, and luckily for us, Virginia has a ton of wineries! Typically once a year, Jennifer and her girlfriends enjoy doing a wine tour of several wineries where they sample the various wines and foods they each have to offer. You can learn a lot about different types of wines offered as well as what you like or do not like. Who doesn’t love to catch up while enjoying a glass of your favorite beverage. On the other side, you can enjoy catching up at your favorite brewery while sampling some of their many seasonal or special beer offerings that may only be available for a limited time. If you find yourself interested in learning about making beer or wine, most breweries and wineries offer tours which cover how they make and store the final products.
Take a Road Trip
Do you find yourself daydreaming of hitting the road and exploring some new destinations? If so, you may be a candidate for taking a road trip with your friends. This can be something as simple as travelling to a nearby point of interest, going to an antique mall, or just setting out on the road to see where you end up! Setting out on a road trip can be exciting, and the best part is that you and your friend(s) can decide where you go, how long it lasts, and ultimately which direction you set off in! Just make sure you take a dependable vehicle, some spending cash, and maybe some snacks for the car ride so that no one gets hungry while travelling the road!
Grab a Cup of Coffee or Tea
Do you enjoy drinking a cup of coffee or tea? If so, find a nearby coffee or tea house where you can select from a variety of roasts and flavors, as well as some small snacks. Whether a Starbucks is your thing, or you would rather visit a locally owned shop, the sky is the limit when it comes to this option. More often than not, you will have a variety of options when it comes to selecting a place to go to enjoy your favorite cup with friends. Some places even allow you the option to sit in a comfortable and plush chair or couch while catching up on things with your friends. This is probably our most popular option of fun things to do with friends, and can be done very affordably.
Take a Class Together
Our final selection of fun things to do with friends is to take a class together. Whether is a painting class, a yoga or fitness class, or a class on making wine or beer, the sky is the limit. Typically you can find options in local classifieds, online, and even at your local stores. Cooking classes are another fun option that allows you to learn a new skill, and then enjoy eating the results! No matter which option you choose, you will be doing something new with your friends that is fun and is creating a memory and experience that you will remember for years to come.
