6 Tips for Surviving Disney World in the Rain

6 Tips for Surviving Disney World in the Rain

Unfortunately, mother nature doesn’t care how much time, effort, and money you have put into making your Disney World vacation the most magical vacation on earth. Florida weather can be extremely fickle so even if the week long forecast says no rain, it will probably rain at some point during your stay. The best thing you can do to survive Disney World in the rain is have a plan so you’re not walking around the happiest place on earth soaking wet.

Pack Ponchos

Go to your local Dollar Tree and buy several sets of ponchos. Disney of course sells ponchos in the parks but last time I checked they were $9. Yes, $9 for a piece of plastic with the Disney logo on it. If there’s even a 10% chance of rain in the forecast, pack these with you in your backpack so you won’t get stuck paying the mouse’s price for a poncho. If you must purchase Mickey Mouse ponchos, check these out, they are super cute!

Visit Lesser Known Indoor Attractions and Shows

Sometimes when you’re rushing around hitting the big attractions like Splash Mountain, Slinky Dog, Test Track, etc. you forget about the less popular indoor attractions such as:

Magic Kingdom:
The People Mover
The Carousel of Progress
The Hall of Presidents
The Country Bear Jamboree
Mickey’s PhilharMagic

Epcot:
O’Canada
Impressions de France
The American Adventure
Reflections of China
Living with The Land

Hollywood Studios:
Frozen Sing-a-Long
Muppet Vision 3D
Voyage of the Little Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage

Animal Kingdom:
Finding Nemo the Musical
Festival of the Lion King
It’s Tough to Be a Bug

A rain storm at Disney is a perfect time to take in some of these lesser known shows and attractions that you might otherwise skip over.

Choose Clothing Wisely

For shirts and pants, make sure you wear something that is made of a moisture wicking material. That way, if you get caught without a poncho at Disney World in the rain, you aren’t soaked for the rest of the day because you wore a cotton shirt and shorts. Also, make sure you wear tennis shoes and not flip flops, I can’t tell you how many girls I’ve seen wearing flip flops in a rain storm and completely bite it on the pavement when they slip out of their flop. Disney pavement and sidewalks are extremely slippery when they get rained on. With your tennis shoes, make sure you wear moisture wicking socks as well, nothing is worse than sopping around in wet socks!

Skip the Parks and Resort Hop

If it’s really bad out there (Brian and I were in Disney World in 2017 for Hurricane Irma), skip the parks all together and resort hop. Now, if you’re staying at the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, or the Contemporary, this is pretty easy, just hop on the monorail and ride around. If you’re not staying at one of these resorts, you have a few options. Catch a bus to the Magic Kingdom and then get on the Resort Monorail loop or call a Minnie Van and have them take you to one of those three resorts. You can choose to have a nice sit-down meal at the Grand Floridian, meet Mickey and the gang at Chef Mickey’s, have a drink at Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto, and shop around the gift shops.

Visit Disney Springs

Disney Springs has over 40 shops and restaurants to explore, you will have to walk to each of them of course, but you could spend hours in the World of Disney. If shopping isn’t your thing, you can also catch a movie at the AMC Dine-In Theater or go bowling at Splitsville. Lastly, you can visit The VOID: Step Beyond Reality, Disney’s newest hyper reality experience featuring Star Wars and Wreck-It Ralph.

Don’t Let the Rain Get You Down

If walking in the rain with your poncho on doesn’t bother you, get out there and have some fun at Disney World in the rain! For the most part, unless you’re facing hurricane force winds or lightening storms, Disney operates as usual. Rain storms also scare away a lot of people so if you’re going in a busier time of the year, the rain could be a blessing in disguise because it will certainly cut down on your wait times. It’s also a perfect time to get a photo in front of the Cinderella Castle with no one in the background!
